After spending half a day yesterday outside at the Colonie Farmers Market adoption clinic for the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society, and being outside today in Bennington for the Wicked Creepy C/X race, no matter how hard I tried – I just couldn’t get warm.
I shivered my way through the morning, only managing to fire off a few photos of the citizens race; all the while feeling guilty while I watched Bob from and Andrew pop up all over the place with their cameras in hand seeming invincible to the sharp wind and cold.
It’s days like today that I really admire the racers for doing what they do best, because it’s one thing to show up with all the right intentions, and it’s another to do it even when you don’t feel like it, especially lap after lap.
I recently read Lance Armstrong’s “It’s Not About The Bike”. I had purchased it for Cody for $.50 at a garage sale over the summer and ended up eagerly reading it myself. In it he describes what his days training for races entails: grueling hour-long rides, sometimes in conditions that range from rain, snow, to wind, heat and sun. As corny as it sounds: It’s really not about the bike.
It’s about that steady power that pushes the wheel around faster, the ability to block out cold, pain and doubt, or at least the skill to ignore it. The focus not to fall, and the determination not to quit even if looks like you might come in last and it’s the only reasonable thing to do.
So in short, I better dig up the hand and toe warmers for the Bethlehem Cup on Nov 14th!

Many were wondering how this years Saratoga C/X would compete with last years considering the move to the new location, especially since there would be no “Ditch of Death”. But the highlight of the course was the wrap around sand pit which was probably the most amusing thing seen all season with riders wrestling with posts and getting tied up in tape.
One has to wonder though if Andrew has any fellow rider friends left, seeing as though he is responsible for the course design and didn’t put himself through what we’ll call “Satan’s Sandpit”. Though maybe he’s just not that concerned with having friends. ( We joke, we joke! )
Besides a little rain the turnout was great, the family friendly event boasted a bouncy bounce, pizza on wheels, Subway tent and the guys from Sigma Sport, Gore Bike Wear, Serotta and Kelly Bedford Custom Frames were all there to represent. Though someone must have called the paparazzi, because at every turn and behind every corner they were there, even when you thought you were alone, bulbs flashing, cameras snapping, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many photogs at a ‘cross race before. You’d think Jeremy Powers himself was there racing in disguise.
A “run what you brung” race brought out the rain and riders dressed in costumes with some interesting bikes, even a tandem bicycle that only made it through 30 seconds of the race before the chain fell off.
Only 2 more races to go: Bennington’s wicked creepy race and the Bethlehem Cup, though it will be hard to compete with Saratoga’s CX, which as a spectator, has been the most entertaining race so far.

The Uncle Same GP at Prospect Park in Troy was a 2 day cyclocross extravaganza. After shivering through most of Saturday, Sunday surprised us with warm weather and sun. The first day was a bit more exciting with riders slipping and sliding in some tougher areas, and many were relieved to see the course was changed over for a more traditional feel on Sunday. Even monkey man made an appearance, banging his plastic drum long into the day, even hanging around to show the elites some love.
The fall colors really popped overnight and I caught some nice shots of riders coming around a beautifully flame tipped tree with burnt colored leaves littering the ground.
We ended our day at Brown’s Brewery in Troy, relaxing, sipping fresh beer and of course — talking about ‘cross.
Next up is the Saratoga Ride you can check them out: http://spacx.blogspot.com/

By the sound of its name, you wouldn’t think that Lake Desolation would be an inviting place to visit; but the truth is that atop a winding hill sits a local tavern across from a quiet lake. The tavern is owned and run by Aaron Miller and his charming Golden retriever brood: Tanner, Tucker and Jackson. Aaron opens his tavern early on these days, with the promise of pulled pork sandwiches, salads and fresh fruit after the race. And don’t expect him to be waiting for you at the finish line, he’s the kind of guy that leads his pack up the hill and then tears down it with a huge grin and his Tinney’s jersey flapping in the wind.
Twice a year friends gather to race up that winding hill in what is kindly called the “Bridge to Bridge Race.” Which could more accurately be described as a slow and grueling uphill battle against the cement, sun and unexpected or explained mechanical malfunctions.
Some of these races have been ridden in blazing hot conditions, while others in freezing rain and bitter wind that swept over the lake and; cut through endless layers of clothing. But each year by word of mouth, the race grows bigger, the pack wider, with more and more people sporting the Tinney’s logo on their back.
Next Spring no doubt there will be even more waiting to climb that hill, and as Team Tinney’s Tavern grows bigger, so does its group of friends.

Ironically, the first post of this new blog couldn’t be farther from its tagline “Muddy bikes, Muddy photos, Muddy words”, because the 2010 C/X race down in Cooperstown at the Brewery Ommegang was anything but muddy.
In fact, it was quite opposite of the weather that can be expected at most cyclocross races — with blue skies, relatively warm weather and…no mud. Not that anyone seemed to mind, people lingered with friends eating and listening to live music long after the races and of course, drinking beer. Not just any beer but rich belgium ale made right on the premises. In fact, the Brewery Ommegang produces such popular ale that they are in the process of expanding and constructing new buildings to meet such high demand.
The now annual race that started in 2007 also boasts a raffle to win your weight in beer. Riders waited impatiently as numbers were called out one by one, until finally a young man rumored to have ridden the entire course on a full suspension mountain bike won his weight in beer. His 245 lbs equated to about 17 cases of beer, which if you are doing the math equals over $1000.00 in booze.
The real question is how he got those 17 cases home…

So I’ve decided to give a new home to all my cycling reviews, posts and photos.
I think they will be much happier here with all the new space!
While Cody, Billy, Bret and Brad are mountain biking out in the Mid-West desert, I will be getting this blog all ready to go for when they return to race at the Brewery Ommegang on 10/3/2010.
Stay tuned!
